The original and still the best. The hardcover edition first appeared in 1984. Still in print, it has kept the same dust jacket. The publisher of the first editions was the US Naval Institute Press. The first paperback arrived in 1985, with the telltale gray periscope design.
The Written Word (Others)
After the movie was released, an edition was printed that included Sean Connery on the cover. A newer paperback edition was printed with the new blue cover design. In 1999, a special 15th-anniversary edition was printed. On oversized paperback, it appears to be printed directly from the original 1985 edition -- the author bio is the same, and mentions Clancy now working on his second novel! And finally, there is truth in glasnost; the Russian version of HfRO.
Book on Tape
First is the book-on-tape as released before the movie. (Notice the sticker on the cover indicating the new film.) The post-movie versions came in either the 10-tape unnabridged version or the 2-tape abridged version.
